"The Throne of the Heavens, for anyone suicidal or fool enough that doesn't die trying to reach the apex of its glory."
The Crescent Mist Peaks are a Landmark, biome and key religious location of high Vibrational Density in the upper layers. They are a contradiction of Sky Glass and waterfalls carved into the sky, forming an idyllic wound in the world's highest spine, as beautiful as it is lethal. They are amongst the highest peaks in Arcanoria, and hold the clearest view of the Grand Thread Rings of all Landmarks.
Three Laws govern all who enter:
The Mist Remembers: The silver mist is a sort of vaporized Lunehymn, carrying fragmented dreams of every pilgrim who has climbed before. Prolonged exposure is to risk experiencing someone else's death as vivid hallucinations.
The Mountain Dreams in Fractals: The Sky Glass formations are not random. They are the mountain's dream-logic made visible, the same recursive pattern repeating at every scale, from frost Crystals to the arrangement of the peaks themselves.
The Abyss Listens: The Lunar Abyss is not empty. It is receptive. Sound carries downward without decay, and anything shouted into the chasm returns transformed, as though something below has answered in a language that only resembles the original words.
The location itself is composed of several mountain valleys that grind jagged fangs of veined granite and black ice that rise in the shape of crescents and arched pass ways above a frozen wasteland that never fully surrenders to winter. Amidst the impossible terrain there are several waterfalls that pour not into rivers but through veins of Sky Glass that flow upward as visible ribbons of fractals behind translucent stone before spilling from cliff lips in thin white curtains that dissolve long before reaching ground.
The Sky Glass itself forms in layered shelves across the highest plateaus, simultaneously delicate in appearance and impossible to shatter, its surface fractal-threaded with the frozen geometry of dendrites, spiraling forms, and snowflake architectures repeating at every scale. The mountain is said to be quietly demonstrating the same pattern at every magnification, forever.
The Crescent Mist Peaks do not offer wisdom, power, or salvation. They offer only friction and the resistance that forces pilgrims to become more than they were.
Culturally, they are a place of "do or die" for anyone seeking a deep understanding of oneself. These are the idyllic places that create or break a person anew. It is one of the most profound personal journeys in Arcanoria. Its structure is divided by height into these core regions:
- Sky Glass Ascent: The uppermost zone and accessible by very few, the Grand Thread Rings entire structure of its Fractal Kaleidoscopes is seen at every layer of the ascent. In the Strand Pools, the clearest Sky Glass forms in layered shelves. Coherence is at its peak here, but so is exposure. It is filled with towers, ramps, galleries and stairs of ice, raised and spun with the architecture of dreams. The air thins, and spells cast at this altitude risk triggering a localized Chaotic Resonant Cascade that can shatter the nearby Sky Glass formations and changing the topology of entire passes. The internal corridors of the ascent change continuously making it mandatory to carry a Resonance Stabilizer and a Celestial Astrolabe to guide the path.
- Whispering Gallery: Rows of natural amphitheaters carved with perfect acoustics. Very jagged fractal shapes with both high and low Coherence which tend to make Spellweaving unreliable. The inner galleries shift quickly in topology. Here, a whisper at one end can be heard clearly at the other — it is said that the mountain answers. This is the typical end of pilgrimages. Legend holds that when a pilgrim speaks their original Motif Awakening Wish aloud, the Gallery answers: if the root of fulfilling your wish lies in the future, the sound rings in Consonance as a sign to press onward. If it lies in the past, Discordant Interference shatters the sound as a sign to turn inward, to fix what has not yet been resolved. If drinking concentrated Lunehymn, it is also possible to ask the mountain questions about the own's unconscious and the Consonance or Dissonance reply back as a yes or a no, which makes it useful for Piety and Revelation for oneself.
- Crescent Veils: Mist-shrouded ridges, glacial terraces, twilight-blooming frost flowers with zones of high Coherence and Leylines converging. The mist here is thickest; it is also the most dangerous. Breathing it too long induces Lunehymn Narcosis that induce the vivid hallucinations of past pilgrims' deaths, forcing you to relive their final moments regardless of where these occurred, this is the maximum point the Lunehymn mist touches, and it has a lot of Aetherlight rays that collide with one another nullifying the ascent of more mist.
- Silver Cascades: The Upper Habitable Zone, primarily for Secluded Refuges and Sacred Sites. The name stems from the Lunehymn waterfalls threading through Sky Glass, in visible fractal light mirroring stained glass with iridescent flickers. These zones are known for having Time Bubbles, identifiable by reflections hanging suspended in the cloudy ice. While most of them are visible as actual bubbles that go upward with the cascades, some of them are large enough that a person can get trapped into the Time Bubble experiencing the normal phenomenon within these Strand Pools.
- Boreal Reach: The Lower Habitable Zone and Entry to the Crescent Mist Peaks. The characteristic trees and Glimmerfern fronds give its signature name. On the upward ascent, when almost reaching the silver cascades, the trails become deliberately misleading, with switchbacks double back, forcing climbers to trust memory, and Absolute Certainty over sight. There are some regions with Forsaken Flowers that paint the scene with wounded red amongst the snow.
- Fracture Seams: The lower zones below the Boreal Reach where Consonance and Dissonance clash, silver mist rising. Here, the Crescent Mist Peaks' famous Coherence gradient is most violent featuring the most of the famous "Magic Dead Zones" where spells fail on the border of many Dissonance Spikes where spells backfire catastrophically. The ground itself is unstable; the seams shift with the iconic mirrored pools of fractals.
The Crescent Mist Peaks experience periodic Resonance Tides which are waves of high Coherence that sweep up from the Lunar Abyss like the tide coming in, following the Moon Phase. During a Tide, Spellweaving is amplified; Atonalis tend to hide and during the Ebb, Magic Dead Zones expand, and demons hunt. A "King Tide" occurs every Cycle, coinciding with the Phase of Zenith, and this is considered both the optimal time for pilgrimage and also the most dangerous.
