*"Your wound is not your fault, but your healing is your responsibility - the difference between a Monster and a Hero is not the absence of pain, but the mastery of it."
The moment an emotion becomes so vivid it breaches the veil to signal the skies.
You only receive a Soul Leitmotif, the moment after hitting "rock-bottom." It is a deeply and intimidate personal moment of realization that awakens the magic of any Spellweaver. All magic starts unstable because these are awakened at the most vulnerable but the Spellweaver must equally find the strength to weave both magic and resolve their personal conflicts. If the user awakes mid cast their Motif Awakening, it's likely to become a Catalytic Abyss of Emotion.
Furthermore, a Motif Awakening is structured by a single "Wish" and whatever is vocalized is the phase-lock pairing of the soon to be Spellweaver, and the Great Harmonic Loom. While these wishes aren't really granted as if they were given by a genie, they do serve as the philosophical backbone and driver of purpose against the Weight of Purpose.
A Soul Leitmotif Motif Awakening marks the first time a Spellweaver hears the song of their own soul hence the name "motif" as a musical term. Moreover, it is too the explicit signal of defiance against the encroaching static of Primal White Noise. Thus, a Motif Awakening wish is the physical burning desire of signal isolation amidst The Infinite Void from the Superposed Resonance of a Fundamental Frequency. It is a declaration against the chaos to establish Coherence which sublimates into a physical object as the Soul Leitmotif and the embellishments as Ornaments of the song it carries.
All Motif Awakenings generate Fragment of Meaning and Fragment of Defiance, while some may produce specific Lyrical Fragments associated with their binding.
It's important to differentiate that Motif Awakenings are not always tragedy, they are overwhelming expressions of Emotional Authenticity, while it's more common that a tragedy can trigger a Motif Awakening to find meaning, intense joy can trigger Motif Awakenings as well. The Great Harmonic Loom does not distinguish between feelings, only a Consciousness does. Its Grand Thread Rings can only read the amplitude of Emotional Authenticity, and if it crosses the threshold, the Soul-Key will sublimate into an expression of the Soul-Key. If its the first Motif Awakening, it will create a Soul Leitmotif, if it's already created, the song of the Soul-Key will be embellished with its Ornaments, primary and secondary, if its the second or the third Motif Awakening respectively.
In the case of a completed Soul Leitmotif with both of its Ornaments the overwhelming feeling will drown in the Catalytic Abyss of Emotion forcing an Awakened State.
A starting Spellweaver just had its first Motif Awakening that seeded magic in them from their wound. An advanced Spellweaver will have experienced another critical event in their lifetime, granting them their first Ornament. A master Spellweaver will have fully embellished their soul with its two Ornaments, and only beyond the level of a virtuoso will that Spellweaver unleash their Awakened State.
Awakening to the elements of The Principles of Magic
"The first time your soul has a song. Not because it didn't have any sound before, but because you couldn't hear it."
A Motif Awakening can awaken to different elements on the exact same event, it all depends on how Consciousness process it. This is evident in Void and Luminance pairs. A Spellweaver who had lost a relative to the Great Plague and is basking on the depths of this loss could either:
- Awaken to Void if they begin to become nostalgic about the loss and the shadow it left behind, feeling the Void as a raw emotion before anything. The most important part of the loss is exactly how the defining relationship is severed and whether the Spellweaver continues to have any worth. They are being crushed by the Weight of Value.
- Awaken to Luminance if instead of being overwhelmed by emotion, they rationalize the loss trying to understand the meaning of "Why did this happen?" if they are fixated on the truth as defensive mechanism, they will be aligned with the compulsion of the piercing light. They are being crushed by the Weight of Flaw.
Another common pairing of opposites is with Flux and Cindergale which both interact with the innate condition of a Spellweaver's internal architecture. The very Mythical Virtuoso of Flux, Orphael embodies this condition. His primary drive is the Lustful nature he was born as part of his Weight of Nature, it's inescapable in the sense that he will always be Lustful. However, the awakening to Flux instead of Cindergale stems from the shame this Legend Trait is generating him.
The inhibition of emotion due to shame from his Empathetic nature is colliding directly with his need of bodily urges, not just as a physical suppression but as an inability to express himself through emotion that eventually breaches the dam and becomes his Flux Motif Awakening Wish: "I wish to feel in a way that creates meaning, to stop running from the shame and desire I've always carried."
Orphael was being crushed by his Weight of Nature but focused on the Weight of Purpose as means to channel it without succumbing to the Weight of Indulgence.
On the contrary side, Motif Awakenings can be born of pure joy or validation as well. This is demonstrated by Eyras on his final Motif Awakening to his secondary Ornament of Resonance when the lover of his new family reassures him during the fight against The Cradle of Echoes that he does belong in a family.
The sheer intensity of the Emotional Authenticity, not trapped in the past but by creating a future by confronting what came before triggers a Motif Awakening. On the cusp between a moment of belonging and profound joy of finally finding a place to rest is the catalyst he requires to vanquish both The Cradle of Echoes. He heals his own wound and gets the happy ending of the family he couldn't have before.
Other joyful Motif Awakenings are regularly to Flux with wishes like: "I wish for this moment to last forever." referring to the overwhelming feeling of a moment of vulnerability and intense satisfaction while being granted Fragment of Catharsis.
Ornaments in Motif Awakenings
The introduction of secondary and tertiary bindings is much more than mere specialization in hybrid elements. These represent the chronological scars of how has a Legend's Ballad developed and the key moments of their character development. They aren't necessarily tied to the expression of the original wound but tend to thematically align with the choices of the Spellweaver as the wound gives the defensive mechanism towards surviving the Weight of Purpose.
- After witnessing the Betrayal of the Moon in the Seventh Cycle the loss of the identity she cherished and built around romanticizing collaboration with the Auric Aria on the creation of the Known Universe vanishes her self worth. This profound loss of meaning creates the first Motif Awakening to Void that becomes her Soul Leitmotif through her wish: "I wish I was seen, and that I mattered."
