The Registers of Magic Arts

Explore the disciplines of the seven bindings, their component arts and the classifications scholars still dispute.

Cymatics of the soul

Spellweaving begins with intent. A Consciousness shapes the threads of reality into a musical pattern, and the universe responds to that pattern as a spell.

The Seven Bindings

Seven principles govern a spell. Six depend on the weaver’s abilities and state of mind; the seventh is the Essence Sacrifice they offer.

The Seven Tessituras

A living atlas of magic. Choose a thread and let each discovery open the next.

Tessitura of Resonance

Anything modifying Resonance, mostly by projecting and shaping Resonance Fields. The signature question of this tessitura is where does the field reach, and what does it do to everything inside it.

Tessitura of Luminance

Anything modifying Luminance by revealing or cancelling information. The signature question of this tessitura is what is true, and who is allowed to see it.

Tessitura of Flux

Anything modifying Flux through emotion, empathy and Harmonic Entanglement. The signature question of this tessitura is what is carried between two states, and does the carrying change either of them.

Tessitura of Void

Anything modifying Void and its properties of repulsion, warping and attraction. The signature question of this tessitura is what happens in the space between two things, and what can be made to live there.

Tessitura of Cindergale

Anything modifying Cindergale through momentum, passion and focus. The signature question of this tessitura is where is the energy going, and what does it cost to point it somewhere else.

Tessitura of Crystal

Anything modifying Crystal through will, imagination and Probability Amplitudes. The signature question of this tessitura is what shape is the world required to hold, and who is certain enough to make it hold.

Tessitura of Strand

Anything modifying Strand and the link between the Trinity Harmony and the Auric Heptacode, mostly through Object Permanence. The signature question of this tessitura is what did this used to be, and how much of that is still binding.

How the classification actually works

Why a register sits where it sits

A register belongs to the tessitura of its Major Note, or Root, even when another binding supplies more components. Divination reaches the future through Crystal, but its purpose is clear sight, placing it under Luminance. Dimensional Arts use five bindings and were created by a weaver with a Strand Soul Leitmotif, yet belong to Resonance because the finished working behaves as a field. The chips beside each practice show its complete chord.

Two roads to the same place

Different Major Notes can lead to the same result. Luminance’s Clarity Magic bends light to reveal structure; Void’s Dream Magic follows a tether beyond the Stellar Veil. Both reach the future through Crystal. Resonance’s Levitation Arts and Cindergale’s Propulsion Arts both lift a body from the ground. A weaver’s understanding of these relationships gives them more than one way to solve a problem.

What belongs to no tessitura

Miracle Magic can arise in any tessitura through perfect Resonance alignment and the best available condition of Essence Sacrifice. Hemomancy and Chimera Grafting instead describe the fuel used, so they can accompany any spell type. Blood provides a higher tier of fuel than physical exhaustion, increasing even an ordinary cooking spell’s power. Since the Age of Blood, every practice of hemomancy has been classified as Forbidden Magic.

The area of Dissonance and Forbidden Magic

Forbidden Magic, also called Atonalis Spellweaving, can arise in any tessitura. It includes practices judged too dangerous, destructive, indiscriminate, unpredictable, gruesome, cruel or unsustainable. The suffering they cause leaves Formless Masses behind and increases the risk that a victim or caster will become an Atonalis if their Composure breaks.

Would an Atonalis do this to lure, trap, or consume prey?

Civilizations use this question to judge practices too numerous to list. A practice that meets the definition is outlawed as Forbidden Magic.
