A soul does not need to sing alone. Sometimes, it needs a choir of crystallized vibrations to find its true voice." Daedalus, the Mythical Virtuoso of Crystal
Sometimes referred to as Auric Chimes, Auric Bells are a type of Primary Instrument created by Daedalus during his entire life but formally established in the Golden Age of Hollowmarch, and are primarily used by the Auric Order in the New Testament within several types of the instrument family.
Auric Bells were conceived by taking direct inspiration from Aurelian's Soul Oscillator, and inverting its philosophy entirely. Where the Soul Oscillator listens and resonates outward from the self, the Auric Bell Staff imposes Resonance through mechanical precision and crystallized geometry, forging it from the outside in. It consists of a complex two-handed instrument that mirrors a staff, bearing articulated arcs of several golden bells along its upper section, a keyed interface along the grip, and a hollow interior of Sky Glass-lined panels that form the acoustic heart of its design.
The Auric Bell Staff is, before anything else, a real instrument. Any trained musician can play it regardless of whether they are a Spellweaver.
Physical Philosophy
Daedalus built the Auric Bell Staff as the technological ceiling of Hollowmarch. The instrument evolved throughout his life with Aurelian during their clearing of the Great Expanse, going from a crude prototype to its final conception in the Auric Forge after Hollowmarch was built on laureated marble.
Its final conception was the finest craft of its time, equivalent in precision and ambition to the finest hydraulic organ or engineered siege work, yet assembled from nothing but lever, pulley, cord, and hinged plate. There are no cogs. There is no clockwork. Every moving component is a direct mechanical consequence of force and tension, and the only intelligence in the instrument beyond its maker's hands is geometric. What appears complex on its surface resolves, under examination, into a set of elegant physical principles arranged with the Absolute Certainty that was the signature of Daedalus's Crystal binding.
The instrument therefore coexists in two realities that are inseparable from each other:
- The acoustic reality: A genuine playable instrument with physical sound production, tunable bell arrays, a mechanical percussion rail, and a keyed clapper system producing honest acoustic output at every press.
- The magical reality: The Sky Glass lining of the resonance cavity transforms the instrument's interior into a memory of vibration — holding, layering, and gradually releasing accumulated harmonic energy through a property of the material itself, requiring no mechanism that Hollowmarch has yet invented.
These two realities do not compete. The magic does not replace the instrument. It extends it. And the extension is, as all things Daedalus built, a function of geometry applied with precision to a problem no one else had thought to solve.
The Resonance Box and the Crystalline Memory of Motion
The hollow interior of the staff is lined with eight Sky Glass panels — concave sheets etched with fractal Auric Geometry and arranged in an octagonal column running the length of the resonance cavity. It carries a permanent Sympathetic Vibration with Aetherlight and Lunehymn. Its acoustic property is simpler than its theology: Sky Glass does not merely reflect sound. It holds it.
The octagonal arrangement was not arbitrary. While Daedalus first considered it blasphemous and stubbornly preferred an heptagonal arrangement, he came to realize that eight faces produce four bilateral axes of reflection symmetry, meaning that a sound wave entering the cavity from any bell strike finds not one but four simultaneous reflection paths arriving back at the acoustic center at equal intervals. "The instrument had to work first. The gods could wait."
The constructive interference of these four returning wavefronts at the center produces the cavity's characteristic pressure amplification — the felt hum the player senses through the grip. A square or circular chamber would scatter the wave or produce a single dominant axis. Only eight faces, Daedalus determined, produced this four-way convergence at every Fundamental Frequency within the instrument's range and so he gave up on the heptagonal idea.
The fractal Auric Geometry etched into each concave face functions simultaneously as symbolic inscription and acoustic diffuser — the carved geometry breaks up flutter echo between panels while preserving the geometric reflection path for the fundamental frequency. The panels are not merely decorated. They are engineered.
The cavity's geometry is tuned to a specific Helmholtz frequency determined by the interior volume, the panel angles, and the cumulative opening area of all micro-shutters at full keypress engagement. This frequency sits deliberately between the instrument's lowest and highest bell fundamentals — the harmonic median of the full array. Every bell in the assembly therefore sits in a sympathetic relationship with the cavity's own resonant pitch. The cavity is never alien to any bell it receives. This is why the Crystalline Memory of Motion establishes itself within four bars rather than requiring extended warming: the Sky Glass is not learning a new frequency each time. It is returning to the one it was built to hold.
When a bell is struck inside the cavity, the resulting sound wave travels between the eight angled panels in a precise geometric path calculated by Daedalus through years of experimentation. Rather than dissipating as air disturbance the way any ordinary enclosed chamber would, the Sky Glass panels trap the wave's motion inside their crystalline lattice for a brief but measurable duration — long enough for the acoustic pressure to accumulate in the cavity wall rather than escape outward all at once. The panels then release this stored pressure gradually and uniformly, sustaining the vibration well past the moment of the original strike.
The practical consequence is that the cavity remembers the last struck note across several beats. When the percussion piston fires next, it does not need to overcome the full acoustic resistance of a silent chamber. It is striking into a cavity already vibrating sympathetically at the bell's natural frequency. Each successive strike costs less mechanical force to produce the same volume. The stored vibration acts as a flywheel of sound: once set turning by the first honest strike, it keeps turning with each small push that follows. A trained player learns to feel its hum through the grip and time their piston releases accordingly, not fighting the silence, but joining a rhythm already moving.
This is why the percussion rail requires no cog mechanism to sustain its tempo. The player sets the first beat. The Sky Glass cavity sustains the Resonance between beats. The piston only needs to reinforce the vibration at the right moment rather than restart it from nothing. The tempo wheel at the lower grip pre-sets the tension of the piston cords; the Sky Glass flywheel does the rest.
Daedalus named this principle the Crystalline Memory of Motion, and considered it one of the most significant discoveries of his life — that Sky Glass does not merely show the world what it is, but remembers what it was. This was the same principle that later Luminaire came to perfect during her life making Resonance Boxes reusable as the effective recording device of the pre digitalization Arcanoria.
Structure of the Instrument
Staff's Body
The staff is forged from Aetherlight-tempered gold alloy which is harder than bronze, lighter than iron, warm to the touch, and resistant to vibrational fatigue across sustained play. The shaft is hollow throughout, with the resonance cavity occupying the inner channel from the base of the bell section down to approximately mid-staff. The lower half is solid-walled for structural rigidity when the instrument is carried as a walking staff or braced in combat.
The exterior carries three operative features:
- A deployment collar at the junction of bell section and lower staff — a rotating ring that, when turned a quarter-rotation, releases the bell arcs from their dormant lock and allows the spring-tension arms to extend.
