The Legend Relationship system is the primary drive of Echoing Bonds in Arcanoria, and serves as the acoustic truth beneath the element of Strand. Every Legend Relationship is, at its core, a thread of Strand woven between two Consciousness that chose to matter to each other.
The system has a hard cap up to 7 simultaneous significant Legend Relationships, where adding a new one requires snapping the tether of another. This deliberate act of Relational Severance carries its own mechanical and narrative consequences but reflects the human capacity of having deep bonds depending on the point of life of each Legend. This cap is not arbitrary; it reflects the human capacity for deep bonds depending on the point of life of each Legend, and they're the ultimate fuel for Essence Sacrifice.
Depending on the story of ruin, tragedy, honor, and love some Legends arrive at the cap young while others die having filled only two slots, and still both are complete lives, and both write their note and all of its complex relationships into The Eternal Symphony.
The most essential architectural principle of Legend Relationships is that the system is asymmetrical. A Legend can feel Devoted toward another, but that feeling will not always be corresponded, and if it is corresponded, it won't always be at the same depth of Affection, level of Romantic Interest, direction, or through the same Love Language. Two independent readings coexist simultaneously for every type of Legend Relationship. Thus, the interference pattern they produce between them is more narratively potent and acoustically real than either reading alone.
Legend Relationships are a key component of calculating a Constellation's Myth Grade when the Legend dies, and carry direct ties to their respective Legend Opus, and Legend Titles.
The Legend Relationship system is divided into two distinct but nested layers operating on an axis of Consonance and Dissonance:
- Affection System: The universal engine of relational depth. It governs all significant bonds regardless of romantic possibility, and it manifests through several types such as deep friendships, brotherhood, familial love, mentorship, rivalries, sworn enmity, intellectual equals, and platonic devotion. Affection increases or decreases based on Events and the personal story between two or more Legends. Shared Affection and Achievements grants a unique shared Legend Opus.
- Romantic Interest System: The second conditional subsystem that manifests for Legends who have already developed Affection, and can only fully trigger based on the romantic pairing based on compatibility, Events, and a Legend's sexual orientation. Until all the conditions are met, Romantic Interest and its mutual development are inert within the Affection system, unless it's a deep unrequited bond. Moreover, the Romantic Interest system is able to create offspring of Legends that enriches the Echoing Bonds of families and carries forward a new Strand thread into future Ages as playable Legends.
The Soul Sheet Music of Legends
When Civilization is directing or interacting with a Legend, increased Affection toward them enhances the ability to read that Legend's Soul Sheet Music that is the acoustic score of their Soul-Key, and the Coherence of their Fundamental Frequency. The more Affection is developed, the more clearly that Legend's inner architecture becomes legible. This reading exists in three tiers of depth.
Sight-Reading
The Surface Tempo, Dynamics, and Basic Signature.
The first tier of Soul Sheet Music understanding. It identifies the structure of the Soul Sheet Music in broad strokes that are enough to recognize the piece, yet not deep enough to understand what shaped it or how it interacts implicitly with the world. Sight-Reading gives access to:
- The superficial Legend Traits: An overview of a Legend's core Origin without context or its relational data alongside their current and exact Personality Legend Traits but not the place where they evolved from. It also includes their Spellweaver Legend Traits that present as mastery.
- The observable surface of who the Legend presents themselves to be, including the visual Soul Leitmotif including their primary binding and whichever Ornaments they made have and, unless their Composure is Spiraling, it's unclear at what stage they are either. Only the mask is visible.
Moreover, there are Resonance marks on the evolved Personality Legend Traits, usually giving slight hints of where they may have evolved from. This lingering Resonance doesn't explain or hint the origin, but it serves as visual information that the complete score and understanding for a Legend has yet to be revealed, and it's possible to misunderstand the origin of Legend Traits through illusion, deceit, and informational manipulation.
Example: At this level, a Civilization can identify that a Legend possesses the World Shaping Maverick Legend Trait. As an Apex Trait it's clear that they fought for it but Civilization cannot yet hear what shaped their story.
Contrapuntal Harmony
The Underlying Harmony, Chord Progressions, and Counterpoint.
This stage of understanding is the required level to progress with the Romantic Interests system.
The second tier of Soul Sheet Music understanding, It requires a stage II of Affection of Consonance or above or a deep background analysis outside of a direct relationship. This is the minimum threshold at which a Legend's Affection and their Legend Relationship web becomes visible to Civilization. Contrapuntal Harmony gives access to:
- The first evolution of Legend Traits: Understanding where each current Legend Trait came from by going one-step backwards.
- The relational origins of the context and relationships behind a Legend's Origin traits.
- Their active Legend Relationship web with all threads and types, and their Affection level, reading for each active bond.
This tier signals the transition into reading the Resonance marks of their Soul-Key, this is the operational layer for most information that Civilization has with most Legends and Major Actors they've been interacting with. If the understanding comes not from connection but from observation, it's prone to register wrong information through deceit or incomplete truths before it reaches this level.
Example: At this level, a Civilization can see that the World Shaping Maverick Legend Trait evolved from Reality Bender — understanding that this Legend's ambition was not innate but arose from a prior disposition toward bending perception. The first Resonance mark has resolved. However, Reality Bender is a middle trait which means that a second Resonance mark still remains, implying depth beneath the origin of how they got Reality Bender.
Symphonic Resonance
Maximum understanding. The Internal Monologue as Ostinato of Their Leitmotif.
The third and last tier of Soul Sheet Music understanding. It is reachable only through the maximum development of Affection in Stage III of Consonance, and requires having survived a Fractured or below level of Composure together. At this level, the reader can hear the Legend's internal monologue as the recurring ostinato of their Soul Leitmotif, meaning they have reached the theme that has played beneath everything they have ever said or done. Symphonic Unison Resonance gives access to:
- The complete evolution tree of all their Legend Traits: Considering every step from origin wound to their current expression of all Legend Traits. It narrows the origin of how a Legend achieved an Apex Traits from start, middle to resolution.
- The Motif Awakening wish that awakened magic with their exact phrasing and intention, and how they awakened to their primary binding.
- The locations and conditions of every secondary Motif Awakening of every Ornament and Awakened State.
- All hidden data related to the Legend including their Romantic Interest meter, including the thread pattern and how this Legend's attraction is being expressed or distorted through the substance of their exact Love Language.
