Vow Mark

Vow Marks are a type of Dissonance Curse and the primary currency of subjugation, established in the upper echelons of any high Regalia Pillar Civilization as early as Ages II.

In the high estates of a Regalia Pillar society, traditional coin is often viewed as a crude measure of wealth. True power is measured in Vow Marks. these are not currency in the traditional sense, they are the direct order over a will by perverting the nature of Sympathetic Magic and of the Eleos Blooms meant to keep promises.

These are originally derived from the natural properties of Vow Orchids—rare blooms from the Boreal Reach that blacken when promises are broken—this botanical phenomenon was weaponized by Contract Arts of Slavery Guilds.

By perverting the orchid's natural sympathetic resonance, the aristocracy created a system of total subjugation. To hold a Vow Mark is to hold a life.

Fabrication and Cultural Impact

The Ritual and Mechanics of the Mark A Vow Mark is a dark application of Sympathetic Magic, combining Contract Arts with Mind Control Arts to bypass a victim's agency.

When the courts discuss the trade of marks, they are explicitly negotiating labor, manpower, and the transfer of slave exploitation.

  • The Paste: The sigils require a highly volatile alchemical medium. They are drawn using a paste crafted from frozen Vow Orchids and emberwhisper, and infused finally with the blood of the master. It is similar to the one used to draw Music Glyphs but enhanced by the Vow Orchids.
  • The Carving: The sigil is not merely painted; usually another sharp tool, commonly made from Emberwhisper as well, is used to carve the contract directly into the flesh, searing the master's will and blood into the victim's physical and magical architecture.
  • The Vocalization of the Vow: Making a Vow Mark does require the participation of the victim in the ritual. They have to explicitly state that they will honor the Vow Mark for the orchids to respond, the Resonance to bind to Emberwhisper, and usually they tend to be general agreements that allow room for interpretation, such as: "I vow to fulfill a favor for this mark, I will follow down to the precise line and intent the will of (Master's name) and accept the exchange of a favor until it is fulfilled or we are severed by death." This also makes so that a single Vow Mark only can be used for one favor, and the favors can't be loopingly infinite, they require to be a specific command and action.
  • Magical Affinity: Because the marks rely on Sympathetic Magic, their binding power is entirely proportional to the victim's magical attunement. The stronger the victim's affinity for magic, the deeper and more inescapable the mark's control becomes. And rarely is it vocalized from consent, despite giving "consent" it's usually coercion that forces someone to accept a Vow Mark.
  • The Physical Toll: The mark shifts from black to red. When black, or inactive, it remains as physical weight. While the mark is active, meaning the one honoring the vow has to comply, it leaves persistent, red-hot burns on the skin. If the bound individual attempts to resist a command, or fails to fulfill the specific vow, the mark becomes violently abrasive, inflicting agonizing pain until compliance is achieved. The Terms of Severance Because a Vow Mark is a sympathetic tether linking two lifeforces, it cannot be removed by traditional healing or counter-spells. It only shatters under two absolute conditions:
  • Fulfillment of the Vow: When the Vow Mark is invoked for a specific favor or labor contract, it will naturally dissolve from the skin the moment the terms are completely fulfilled.
  • Vow Marks can be used for almost any command without the ability of the servant to fight back. There are only two limitations which deal directly with the Sympathetic Magic and nature of Vow Marks: the servant can't be made to kill either the master or themselves, as it would sever the tether. A Vow Mark can be used to order assassination of anyone but not for mutiny against the master or as a suicide order to self terminate, including most indirect orders like "continue walking until the edge of the cliff ends."
  • Vow Marks are two way streets, it requires life force to continue existing which means someone can theoretically die from enslaving many by sustaining several servant Vow Mark. Due to this constrain, the aristocracy becomes even more hierarchical with them as you can't command a million vow marks, but you can command someone who holds 10, and use the other 10 he commands to reach 100. There's always someone holding the leash of the jailor.
  • The Severance of Death: Sympathetic magic requires two anchors. If either the master holding the contract or the servant bearing the mark dies, the tether violently snaps, and the mark instantly vanishes from the flesh. Narrative Implementation: The Severed Tether This mechanical lore creates a visceral, silent turning point in the story, perfectly bridging Amadea's infiltration with Cordelia's emotional awakening. When Cordelia desperately indebts herself to her former teacher, Javius, to save Amadea from execution, she offers herself up for "three marks". Javius accepts, physically binding her to his will by carving three Vow Marks into her wrists. Cordelia is once again trapped in the gilded cage of aristocratic abuse, enduring the red-hot burns of the sigils binding her to the man who once oversaw her brutal punishments. Meanwhile, Amadea goes undercover in the aristocratic circles, acting as a spy and an assassin. Her first target is Javius. Amadea ambushes him, using her Hollow-Point saber to vault over him and slit his throat, silencing him permanently before making a swift escape. The Realization: Miles away, Cordelia is sitting in silence, enduring the stinging heat of the Vow Marks on her wrists. Suddenly, she gasps as a sharp, cold shockwave ripples through her magical resonance. She looks down at her wrists. The red-hot burns flicker, turn to ash, and completely dissolve into thin air, leaving behind nothing but unblemished skin. No one needs to tell Cordelia what happened. She knows the rules of Contract Arts. The only way a Vow Mark disappears without the favor being fulfilled is if the master is dead. In that breathless moment, Cordelia realizes that Amadea did not abandon her. Amadea is actively tearing down the rot of the aristocracy to protect her. Staring at her freed wrists, Cordelia finally allows herself to cling to hope.

This narrative sequence is one of the most emotionally devastating moments in the story because it perfectly weaponizes Cordelia’s deepest psychological trauma, only to resolve it through a profound, wordless act of devotion from Amadea. Here is a breakdown of why Cordelia receiving the Vow Marks is so heartbreaking, and how their sudden disappearance serves as the ultimate long-distance message of rescue. The Devastating Context of the Vow Marks Cordelia receiving the Vow Marks is not just a physical punishment; it is a total psychological regression and a tragic repetition of her family's cycle of abuse.
